The City of Warwick is experiencing a rash of trash and yard waste fires.
In the early morning hours of Monday May11, 2015, Warwick Police responded to four locations in the Wildes Corner and Buttonwoods sections of the city for the reports of trash and/or yard waste on fire. The trash and yard waste was at residences and placed at curbside for collection when they were set on fire.
Shortly after 11:00 PM on that same day, a second series of three trash/yard waste fires occurred in the Buttonwoods section of the city.
Though all the fires were quickly extinguished, in one case a parked vehicle sustained minor smoke and fire damage.
All of the fires appear to be related.
A dark colored sedan with tinted windows was reported at two of the fires and may be involved. The Warwick Police are seeking the help of citizens in locating this vehicle and any suspects of the fire setting.
Anyone with information relating to these events is asked to call the Warwick Police Department at (401) 468-4200.
Anonymous information can be left at the Warwick Police Department’s recorded TIPS line: (401) 732-8477.
The Warwick Police Department responded to a single car and tree accident in the area of 1095 Ives Road on May 11, 2015 at approximately 1514 hours. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the collision. The vehicle, which was being operated south on Ives Road went left of center crossed the double yellow lines and struck a tree head on. There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
The operator, a 30 year old male from Exeter, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by East Greenwich Fire Rescue where he was later pronounced dead.
The Warwick Police Department is continuing the investigation to include whether alcohol/drugs were factors in the collision or to determine if the driver possibly suffered a medical episode just prior to the crash.
Based on evidence at the scene as well as witness accounts, it does not appear that speed was a factor. It appears at this time that the operator was at least partially buckled at the time of the crash and the vehicle’s airbag did deploy.
The identity of the operator is being withheld pending full notification to the family.
Investigators are continuing their investigation. Any person with information related to the collision is asked to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401)468-4343.

Motorcyclist critically injured in motorcycle accident on Greenwich Avenue has died.
The Warwick Police responded to a single vehicle accident in Warwick on May 4, 2015, at approximately3:24 pm. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The operator of the motorcycle, Arthur Pelliccia, 57 years of age, from North Providence, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 6th at 7:18 pm. The investigation showed Pelliccia initially travelling south on Greenwich Avenue in the area of Vancouver Avenue before making a U-turn and then accelerating northbound. The operator lost control of the motorcycle on Greenwich Avenue just north of the Church of Christ at 934 Greenwich Avenue and the motorcycle appears to have flipped over before coming to rest. The motorcycle operator was thrown from the motorcycle and did not appear to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Witnesses describe a green older model minivan type vehicle exiting Vancouver Avenue turning left as the motorcyclist approached causing him to slow down. Witnesses have told investigators that it appeared that the motorcycle operator may have exchanged words with the green minivan operator just prior to the crash but there did not appear to be any contact or collision with the two vehicles. The green minivan continued northbound towards Route 113 and at this point may not even be aware of the crash.
Investigators would still like to speak to the operator of the green minivan at least as a possible witness, so anyone with information on the owner or operator of this vehicle is asked to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division. Speed of the motorcycle appears to have been a factor in the crash and there are no indications of alcohol.
The investigation is continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401)468-4343.
Investigators from the Warwick Police Traffic Division located and interviewed the operator of the green van on Friday, May 15 and have determined that the operator did have a brief verbal exchange with the motorcyclist consistent with the witness account, but had no actual knowledge or involvement in the crash. No charges or citations will be issued to the operator of the green van as a result of the investigation.
The investigation has been completed at this point and included additional interviews, physical inspections of the motorcycle, and information obtained from the RI Medical Examiner.
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian and Police Colonel Stephen McCartney announced today that they and the Board of Public Safety will meet next Tuesday with national corporate leadership of Motel 6 to discuss ongoing concerns relative to public safety and the numerous calls for police response to the hotel off Jefferson Boulevard.
In the past year, police have responded to 79 calls at the hotel, resulting in 75 arrests, ranging from drugs and disorderly conduct charges, to alleged sex trafficking and the alleged running of a meth lab from a hotel room.
In advance of the meeting, the motel’s national vice president of safety and security has advised Avedisian and McCartney of steps that have been taken to address the current issues at the Warwick location, including the expansion of off-duty security coverage provided by the Warwick police department; the daily submittal of their guest list; raising the minimum check-in age from 18 to 21; and completing staff training on operations and safety as well as security policies and procedures. The chain is also reviewing calls for assistance over the past year in order to make sound business decisions going forward.
“Motel 6’s leadership has assured both the Colonel and me that they are committed to addressing the existing issues at their Warwick location,” Avedisian said. “The steps they have recently taken, I believe, demonstrate their willingness to work with us to ensure the future safety and security of the motel for their guests and our community in general. We are looking forward to continuing this discussion with them next week.”
