The Warwick Police Department was established in 1921. Prior to that the villages of Warwick were policed by constables and sheriffs since 1648. The department currently has 172 sworn police officers supported by 53 civilian employees that provide municipal policing services to a residential population of 81,000.

WARWICK POLICE SEIZE $45,000 WORTH of ILLEGAL FIREWORKS
On 6/26/2015, the Warwick Police Department received information that a subject living at 270 Palace Avenue in Warwick was selling illegal aerial consumer fireworks.
Based on this information, members of the Warwick Police detective division conducted surveillance of the residence and confirmed the presence of fireworks. The suspect departed the residence in a minivan and was subsequently stopped by the Warwick Police. At that time, illegal aerial fireworks were located in the vehicle. Warwick Police then conducted a search of the residence at 270 Palace Avenue and found a large amount of the illegal aerial fireworks in the garage. The suspect, Javed Mohammad, age 50, was taken into custody and charged with one count of 11-13-1 Sale, use or possession of aerial consumed fireworks, a felony under Rhode Island law. He is being held at the Warwick Police Headquarters pending his arraignment.
Approximately 65 cases of illegal fireworks valued at about $45,000 were seized from the garage and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters. There they were inventoried and subsequently turned over to the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's office for storage and eventual destruction.
The Warwick Police responded to a bank robbery at the Coastway Community Bank, 3830 Post Road, at 9:48 am on June 16, 2015.
The preliminary investigation has disclosed that the suspect entered the bank alone, at approximately 9:45 am and demanded money from two tellers. The suspect fled on foot south on Post Road. The suspect is described as a white male, believed to be in his late forties or early fifties, approximately 5'7", slender build, wearing a black baseball hat, camouflage mask, sunglasses, black gloves, a dark blue or black jacket, believed to be "The North Face" brand, blue jeans, and sneakers. The suspect had dark colored shoulder length hair which may have been a wig. The male suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured as a result of this incident and no weapon was shown or mentioned by the suspect.
