Chasing the Dragon

The WPD and the Norwood Neighborhood Association will join together on April 11th at 7pm to host the US Attorneys presentation of Chasing the Dragon, a town hall discussion about heroin and opioid addiction, treatment and prevention. The forum is in conjunction with a short documentary about the lives of several addicted persons.

The event is open to the public, free and the Crowne has donated the Bristol room to hold it. The event kicks off at 7 PM but will open at 6 PM where numerous prevention and treatment organizations will have information booths to include a narcan training booth.

A must attend if you even think a family member or friend is held by the grip of heroin, fentanyl or even prescribed opiates.

29th Citizens Police Academy Graduates

Thursday November 30th concluded the 29th Citizens Police Academy. It was a great 12 weeks spearheaded by Officer Dan (Maggiacomo). Thank you to all who participated and we are glad to welcome you to our family and the Warwick Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. The attendees had classes on traffic accidents and DUI investigations, K-9 demonstrations, crime scene forensics and other topics to include the two most popular: emergency vehicle driving and firearms training. Added new to the curriculum this class was CPR certification and narcan training.

2017 Warwick PAL Telethon

Warwick Police Athletic League (PAL) began its annual phone solicitation fundraiser event in early December. The telethon will continue through the end of January. If you agree to make a donation an envelope will be left at your house with directions. You will know it is legitimate because there will be tickets to the annual PAL basketball fundraiser game.

If you don't wish to contribute politely say no thank you.

Officer Steere Awarded RI AG's Justice Award

On October 18th, 2017, Officer Aaron Steere and his K-9 Viking were awarded the Rhode Island Attorney General's 2016 Justice Award for Drug Enforcement. This award is given out every year in honor of US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a former RI Attorney General.

Officer Aaron Steere has been the handler for K-9 Viking for over 5 years and has become an important resource not only for the city but also regularly used by HIDTA and the DEA for narcotic searches. Officer Steere made 206 arrests and issued 580 traffic citations in 2016, mostly through his regular hotel and highway interdiction tactics. He, along with K-9 Officer Paul Wells and K-9 Fox, were responsible for 13 K-9 tracks, 4 building searches and 61 narcotic investigations, both in Warwick and assisting the DEA. Officers Steere and Wells with their K-9's were responsible for the seizure of $557,200 in suspected narcotics money, 69.7 pounds of Marijuana, 9.3 kilograms of Heroin and Fentanyl, and 9.1 kilograms of cocaine and crack. Our K-9 unit is an important aspect of our total community policing effort and Officers Steere and Wells contributed to this by giving 18 K-9 demonstrations throughout the year.

Congratulations and keep up the great work. Unfortunately Aaron was on a scheduled cruise with his family and could not attend the ceremony where the Attorney General recognized several other police officers and civilians involved in the criminal justice system.
